The challenge

The challenge

Buying or selling a home is one of the most stressful decisions of your life

In 2025, Doormat rebranded as Ownright. Buyers face paperwork, deadlines and legal language at the moment they can least afford confusion. The new brand needed to show that closings can happen with confidence, clear communication with lawyers and full transparency at every step.

The approach

The approach

Illustration as reassurance

I was asked to build an illustration library for Ownright’s product and website. The goal was simple: make a legal process feel less stressful and more human. Each illustration needed to explain a step clearly and also feel warm and calm.

The illustration system

3 levels of detail, one visual language

To work across a whole product, the library is organized by how much each moment needs to say.

How I built it

From first sketches to a system

How do you draw legal paperwork so it feels friendly?

I started with loose sketches to find a visual language that felt human, then tested how much colour the system needed. These are the two explorations that shaped the final style.

Early sketches

Early sketches

I explored different strokes, soft and angular shapes, and the use of negative space and outline. The goal was a hand-drawn quality that feels warm and approachable.

Colouring exploration

Colouring exploration

At first, I used two to three colours from the brand palette. I eventually settled on a monochromatic look because it felt calmer, which suited a stressful process.

Beyond the screen

Working with Mateo, the creative lead, we extended the illustrations onto branded merchandise, so they became a core part of how Ownright expresses its brand in the real world.
